Always on the First Friday in October, TERRAIN is an annual, juried multimedia art and music event celebrating artists in the Spokane area. Featuring new works by hundreds of artists, and attracting thousands of attendees, it is a celebration of new energy and fresh ideas from all over the artistic spectrum. From painting to poetry to interactive art and film, we try to showcase a little of everything that’s happening to make the Inland Empire a more vibrant, cultural and beautiful place.
Never heard of, or been to the event before? A few things to note:

  • All work is juried by a panel of professionals working in Spokane’s creative scene. Be sure to submit your strongest work, with clear images, in good lighting. We typically get about 400 artists who submit to the show, so think about what will make your work standout and easily discernible by the jury.
  • You can submit up to 5 artworks for FREE. The jury looks at each submission individually (vs. as a body of work), so if you're juried into the show, some of your pieces might be accepted while others might not.
  • If you'd like to submit more than 5 pieces, you can! However, we charge an additional $4 fee per submission. We also cap extra submissions at 5 ($20 total). It takes each juror approximately 25-30 hours to look through applications. This fee helps to compensate them for their extra time.
  • This is NOT meant to be an example of your work. The pieces you submit are what will be juried into the show. Each submission MUST be available at the time of the event. No substitutions can be made. No exceptions.
  • This is a raw-space show taking over about 40,000 square feet in an empty building in downtown, Spokane.
  • This is NOT our art markets. If you're interested in those look for the Bazaar (summer) and BrrrZAAR (winter) applications in our Call for Artists link.
  • Terrain is a FREE community event put on by a non-profit organization. This event was created to build community, make connections, and give exposure to those who participate. We do not pay people to participate, however, there are opportunities to sell your work including original artworks + prints, band merchandise, books, etc.
  • Work cannot be shipped to or from Terrain.

Best of luck, we're excited to discover your work!

#weallbuildthis

Welcome to Terrain's Winter BrrrZAAR 2023!!!

Like our annual summer Bazaar, Winter BrrrZAAR is a marketplace for local artists, artisans and craftspeople to sell work and build relationships with people who care about where they purchase their goods from...but this time, for the holidays!

The event will take place inside of River Park Square (Y’ALL think of all that holiday foot traffic), on one of the busiest shopping weekends of the year (December 14th).

THIS IS A JURIED EVENT:
A panel of local art and retail professionals jury this show. In addition to the work itself, vendor variety and quality/concept of display space will be considered during vendor selection. If you have been accepted into the event by a prior jury there is no guarantee that you will be accepted by another jury. Jurying is all based on the totality of submissions each year.

DEADLINE:
All submissions are due Monday, July 8th at Midnight. NO EXCEPTIONS. The event is tentatively scheduled for SATURDAY, DECEMBER 14th from 11AM-8PM.

ADDITIONAL DEETS:

  • $100 OR LESS. These events are meant to be accessible to all people. Because of this, 50% of a vendor’s items must retail for $100 or less. The remaining 50% of your items can be any price point you want.

The most successful booths master this balance.

ELIGIBLE ITEMS:
Please submit wall art, sculpture, pottery, glass, photography, leather goods, paper goods, handmade furniture, upcycled furniture, handmade and upcycled clothing, handmade and upcycled accessories, and handmade consumable goods like soaps and candles.

That’s what we’re looking for, but we love being surprised. If you made it with your hands, you think it’s awesome, and you want to sell it, share it with us!

Please keep in mind, that we do not accept vendors selling imported products, or non-profits representing crafters who will not be present at the show. All products that you are applying for must be regionally made. We also don't accept those applying to represent a collection of overseas artisans.
VENDOR STALLS:
While River Park Square is a great location it also brings challenges due to fire code and layout constraints - booth spaces will be a little wonky. We will try our best to provide as many 8'x10' booth spaces as possible, there will be smaller booth spaces as well (see question regarding booth spaces).

Each vendor will be responsible for making their booth aesthetically pleasing and a space potential buyers want to step into. Click here to see examples of engaging booths. Booth spaces are $200 each. PLEASE NOTE: We're working with a non-traditional space and each booth size may vary from 8'x10' to 7'x10' depending on location.

Up to 4 artists can share a booth. There is an additional fee of $50 per additional artist.

With limited booth space for this event, we will not be able to provide more than one booth space.

ACCEPTANCE LETTERS:
You will be notified through Submittable by MONDAY, AUGUST 5th if you have been accepted or not. If you do not hear from us by the end of the day on AUGUST 6th, please contact us at team@terrainspokane.com.
LOCATION:
River Park Square (inside of the building in the hallways), 808 W. Main Ave.

IMPORTANT DATES TO REMEMBER:

  • APPLICATION DEADLINE: July 8th, 2024 at MIDNIGHT (NO EXCEPTIONS)
  • NOTIFICATIONS EMAILS: August 6th, 2024

Thanks so much for your interest in selling at From Here! Please keep in mind that the shop is growing and we are receiving more and more applications to participate. We do our best to review and respond to applications in a timely manner, but with the current volume of applications, it could take several months for our team to be in touch.

In addition, the shop is pretty full at the moment. That means if you are juried in, you may be put on a waitlist until a spot opens up.

ABOUT THE SHOP

From Here is the retail program of Terrain, Terrain is a groundbreaking non-profit building community and economic opportunity for the artists, makers and culture creators of the Inland Northwest. A community-building organization at our core, we believe art and creativity have the power to transform Spokane into a stronger, more economically diverse, just, and vibrant city.

From Here exists as a practical means of furthering Terrain’s mission. Our goal is to provide a collaborative retail experience where artists learn from, inspire, share with, and support one another, all while giving customers access to locally made goods.

So in that regard, we are a bit different from other shops. We’re not simply interested in selling locally made goods. Far from it. We want to create an ecosystem of creativity, camaraderie and a place where businesses grow. As a result, we don’t do wholesale, rather we create opportunities where artists can dive in and participate in the happenings of the shop.

When looking for new items to carry we consider the following:

  1. Quality of work.
  2. Are there similar items already in the shop?
  3. Collaboration vs. competition. Is the work already available at other local stores?
  4. Production. Is the artist/maker able to keep up with items turning over quickly?
  5. Community-building. Is the artist/maker able to be an active participant in the shop?

PARTICIPATION OPTIONS:

If accepted into the shop these are our participation options:

  • OPTION #1: 70%/30% split of sales. Plus One 4-hour shift worked each month. 70% goes to the artist. 30% goes to Terrain.
  • OPTION #2: 55%/45% split of sales. 0 shifts worked per month. 55% going to the artist, 45% going to Terrain.

It's important to note — We purposefully make Option #1 the most accessible (in most cases) as again, artist participation is key in meeting the mission/goals of the shop. We’ve also found that those artists who work a shift sell significantly better than those who do not.

➔ With both options, the commission fee Terrain collects goes towards:

  • Manager + Staff
  • Rent, heat and lighting, internet, landline, etc.
  • P.O.S. system
  • Accounting costs
  • Insurance
  • B & O taxes
  • Shop supplies
  • Display structures
  • Signage
  • Marketing + Advertising

OTHER DEETS:

  • Contracts between Terrain and the artist/business are on a rolling month-to-month basis, giving the artist/business the utmost flexibility.
  • Terrain promotes the shop extensively, including paid marketing.
  • We also rely on participants driving their respective audiences to the shop. The more people who come in, the more you and your fellow participants will sell! We encourage each artist/business to post that their items can be found in the shop at least once a month.
  • We work with each artist/business to make sure items are presented in a manner that meets expectations.
  • Each artist/business is given the opportunity to fill a similar amount of space, although we don’t designate certain areas for artist/businesses to sell out of. We do this in an effort for the shop to feel as cohesive as possible as well as a desire for it to feel like a singular shop vs. an indoor market.
  • We do biannual events/parties that participants can choose to partake in or not. We also encourage participants to create exclusive items and limited runs made available only at From Here — especially if you’re selling in another retail storefront setting — as a way to keep the shop feeling fresh and drive foot traffic, and in an effort to complement other local shops, not compete with them.

Doesn't sound like your cup of tea at the moment? Terrain offers many other programs and events that may fit your current needs better - check out our website at terrainspokane.com to learn more about us!

Thanks so much for your interest in participating in From Here!

**NOTE: THIS IS NOT AN APPLICATION TO PLAY MUSIC AT TERRAIN EVENTS**

From Here exists as a practical means of furthering Terrain’s mission of working to ensure artists thrive in our region and to spark the creative economy.

The last point is an important distinction between our shop and other retail locations. We’re not merely interested in selling locally made goods. We want to develop an ecosystem of creativity, camaraderie and a place where businesses grow. As a result, we create opportunities in which artists can dive in and participate in the happenings of the shop.
